Paladin

The paladin is a noble and heroic warrior—often literally the knight in shining armor— a symbol of all that is right, good, and just in the world. Examples of paladins include Sir Lancelot, Sir Gawain, Sir Galahad of King Arthur’s Round Table, and Roland and the 12 Peers of Charlemagne.

Such a warrior has high ideals to maintain at all times.

Paladin Spell Progression

The paladin is granted spells from his God(s). The spheres he has access to is limited by his level. A paladin gains bonus spells from high wisdom.

If a paladin is also a priest he only gains spells from one of his classes.

Holy weapon and armor

Paladins may use special enchanted and blessed weapons and armor. The weapons gains strength as the paladin advances.

Creation of a holy weapon or armor is always as a power 1 item. But the item requires 1 additional rare process, 1 additional rare material and 1 exotic material or process.

Rituals

As a paladin increases in level he must part take in certain rituals and make oaths to the cardinal virtues.  Each ritual must be made at a relevant holy site by a high level priest (10 + paladins new level).

The specifics of the rituals differs for each religion.

Levels

1 0 Protection from evil

The paladin has a natural aura with a 10′ radius. Within this aura, summoned or evil creatures suffer a –1 penalty to all attack rolls. Creatures affected by this aura know the paladin to be the source of their discomfort.

Detection

Detect evil monsters or creatures up to 60′ away by concentrating. A paladin can do this as often as he wishes, but each use takes one round.

Health

Immunity to all forms of natural disease. (Paladins are not immune to lycanthropy and mummy rot etc.)

Spells

A paladin must be lawful good in alignment.

Any paladin who changes alignment loses all his special powers. This loss might be temporary or permanent, depending on the circumstances.

A paladin who consciously commits a chaotic act must find a lawful good cleric of at least 7th level, confess the act, and seek penance within a fortnight or loose a level.

If a paladin knowingly commits an evil act, the character’s looses two levels.

If such an act is committed by the paladin under duress (enchanted or controlled by magic), the loss of status remains in effect until the paladin completes a major quest for the cause of good. The paladin gains no experience points for this quest (to the paladin class), but if successfully completed, he regains the status and powers of his paladinhood.

A paladin that falls beneath level 1 may chose to become an avenger.

2 10.000 Healing

The ability to heal another by the laying on of hands once a day. The paladin can restore two hit points per his experience level.

3 50.000 Turn undead

When the paladin attains 3rd level he can turn undead. This ability functions as if the paladin were a cleric of equal level.

If the Paladin is a priest with the power to turn undead he may add half his paladin level to his priest level for the purpose of turning undead.

4 100.000 Faithful mount

The paladin can summon a special steed at 4th level. This faithful steed might not be a horse—it may be any creature the DM deems appropriate. This steed is bonded to the paladin. However, this steed does not simply appear when called. The paladin likely must find his mount in a memorable way, such as on a quest.

Cannot attract a body of followers. However, he can hire soldiers and specialists—so long as those individuals are not evil. Oath of Prudence

5 150.000 Curative

Cure diseases of all types once a week for every two experience levels as priest spell of twice his level. For example, a 5th level paladin can use his cure disease ability two times a week with the effect of a 10th level priest.

Will not abide the company of those he knows to be evil

Those of other alignments will be tolerated as long as they behave themselves.

The exemption to the rule is if his church or god orders him to cooperate with specific individuals.

 

6 200.000 Circle of power

If the paladin has a holy weapon, he can project a circle of power 10′ in diameter. This circle dispels hostile magic at a level equal to twice the experience level of the paladin. (Full round action as dispel magic spell)

Cannot attract a body of followers. However, he can hire soldiers and specialists—so long as those individuals are Lawfull Good.

Cannot possess more than 10 magical items.

Further, these items must not exceed one set of armor, one shield, four weapons (magical arrows and bolts don’t count), and four other objects.

8 600.000 Resist charm

Paladins with this ability gains a 100% resistance to charm‑like spells and abilities. (charm person, charm monster, vampires charm etc.)

A Paladin can never retain wealth.

He can keep enough treasure to support himself, pay his henchmen, and so on, but all excess monies must be donated to worthy causes. Other characters do not qualify as worthy causes.

He may be the caretaker for others and be responsible for a castle as a noble or church representative.

9 750.000 Poison resistance

The character gains an immunity to all (non lethal) natural (non magical) poisons.

May only use luxuries in honor of his god(s) and may never eat or drink in excess. May never fornicate.

He may use products of good quality but newer in excess.

He may eat or drink anything but may never be intoxicated.

He may have sex with his wife but never with others.

Charity

10% of all treasure garnered or income from stewardship must be given to a lawful good religious institution of the paladin’s choice

The exact effect is determined by the DM in accordance with the faith

The body and soul must be cleansed.

Saving Throw Bonus

Paladins with this ability gain a +2 bonus to all saving throws.

Oath of Fortitude

equates with bravery, endurance, Patience and perseverance.

14 2.500.000 Holy Armor

Gets an additional function such as Flying, Fire Shield, Increased Movement, Regeneration etc.

The exact effect is determined by the DM in accordance with the faith

Ritual of Sacrifice.

The Paladin must die defending the innocent and be raised or resurrected by a pries of the faith.

Sphere of might

If the paladin has a holy armor, he can project a sphere of power 25′ in diameter. This volume dispels hostile magic and functions as magic resistance 25%
